"Blue-Eyed Iris" is the fifth episode in the first season of the Showtime drama series The Big C. It originally aired on September 20, 2010.
Synopsis[]
Cathy catches Adam watching porn. In pursuit of her sexiness, Cathy invites a new man into her life, Lenny, the school's muralist. A rugby injury gets Paul the attention of a female admirer, Tina, and Sean fights to save his "home" (an abandoned building) for demolition. Marlene gives Sean her dead husband's suit.
Plot[]
Cathy buys wild blue-eye irises but get cuts off in line by a woman who gives her the "you don't mind if I go first?" line, and then goes without waiting for an answer. She says she's pressed for time.
Cathy plops her purchase down. "I'm a little pressed for time, too. I have cancer. So would you mind getting your s--- off the counter so I can buy my irises and plant them before I die?"
When she gets home she yells for Adam to help unload the car. When he doesn't come, she walks into his room without knocking and finds him watching porn on his laptop. She steps into the hall then comes back in and sits down next to him. She opens the porn, then offers commentary. "Usually a woman likes a little tenderness before she reaches this point," she says.
She tells him porn isn't appropriate for children, which makes him announce he's not a child and storm out.
Paul meets her out for dinner, sporting an eye patch from his rugby injury. He easily gets the attention of the waiter who has been ignoring her. She tells Paul about catching Adam. "It sucked, like the girl in the video."
Paul gets stuck on the fact she watched porn with their son but never would with him. He tells her he understands its not in her nature to be at the center of anything. He starts quoting his psychologist, saying Angela thinks they're together because they're such opposites: he likes to stand out, she likes to blend.
Cathy plants her irises in the garden. Sean sneaks up on her with a burp. He tells her the building where he's squatting is about to be demolished, but he's run some numbers and thinks he might know how to save it. He gives her hand drawn charts and graphs. "Wow, those one and a half years of business school are finally paying off," she says.
"I know, I figure all I have to do is go in there dressed like a yuppie douchebag and they'll hear me out," he says.
Adam comes home and totally ignores his mom. She goes up to his room and tells him she's sorry for yesterday.
She presents him with a box of condoms. He says he's not doing that and asks why she has to make everything so weird.
She says she knows he will some day and she might not be around to meet all the girls he brings home. Then she's talking about sex again, saying it's not as important to women as other things, like being noticed.
"Women like attention, even if they act like they don't," she says.
She tells him if he's ever on a first date and it's going well, slow down because women want to feel like its worth waiting for.
At school, Andrea enjoys Lenny the muralist boogying to Joe King as he paints. She appreciates his might fine a--.
Cathy looks at the dream big mural and says it's corny, but he likes it. He gets the door for her.
Marlene looks out her window and sees Sean tossing things from Cathy's house into his cart. She goes over to investigate.
She aims a gun at Sean. He tells her he's just collecting Cathy's recycling and is her brother. He doesn't have ID to prove it but he tells her Cathy's never met a pair of khakis she didn't like. That convinces her.
He's wearing Paul's suit, which hangs on him like a clown suit. Marlene orders him to take off the jacket and turn around. She hugs him from behind and tells him to come to her place.
In school, Cathy promises an automatic A to anyone who reads a teen pregnancy pamphlet and writes an essay explaining why it's a crappy idea.
Lenny taps on the window to ask her if the crack in the ceiling bothers her. He offers to fix it and compliments her skirt.
As the students write, she opens her laptop and Googles porn. She puts in headphones and watches some with her reading glasses on.
Andrea tells her she's been jogging after school and is going to kill at the weigh in. She's been motivated by Lenny.
At Marlene's house, she presents Sean with her dead husband's suit. It fits him perfectly. He wore it when they went dancing. Sean takes Marlene for a spin.
Lying back on what might be an exam table, Cathy giggles uncontrollably, explaining she laughs when she's nervous. Shes getting a bikini wax Brazilian by the sound of it. She checks it out in the mirror.
Paul meets Adam for lunch. He says women never say what they mean.
Cathy meets Sean in front of city hall. He tells her about meeting Marlene. She's walking funny and shares the information about her waxing. She says it makes her feel powerful and she kinda wants to show it off.
Adam shoots hoops alone and sees Andrea jogging by. She tells him to stop staring at her chest. He brags he's seen bigger. She offers to let him touch them but he's reluctant. Andrea then grabs his hand and puts it on her boob.
In class, Cathy notices Lenny fixed the ceiling crack. She waves at him through the window. Then, while seated at her desk, she carefully removes her panties, turns in her chair to spread her legs and flashes him.
Sean asks to see someone about the building, but the guy at the desk won't let him in without an appointment. Sean starts railing about his right to be heard and tosses the phone.
Paul sits in his car and drinks beer. "Rugby slut" Tina comes over and says she likes the sexy pirate look. She pulls out a joint and suggests they have some fun; Paul is receptive.
Back at the city offices, two security guards take Sean into custody.
As Cathy puts her iris by the window, Lenny approaches her from behind and places his hands on her shoulders. She responds. He barely gets a chance to ask if she's sure she wants to do this when she's got his pants undone and is coupling with him on a school desktop.
